Glidewell Dental is one of the largest providers of patient specific products for restorative dentistry in the world. Thousands of custom made items, such as dental restorations, implants, and appliances are produced daily at our facilities. In order to deliver functional and aesthetic products, high precision and consistency are essential. Traditionally, dental manufacturing heavily relied on highly skilled technicians. One of the major challenges in high volume custom manufacturing is maintaining consistent level of quality throughout the enterprise, especially across various geographic locations. Introduction of the dental CAD/CAM technologies during the last decade drastically reduced the amount of tedious manual labor. Now the next wave of innovation is about to disrupt the industry, AI-driven systems. These systems are not rigidly programmed to perform repetitive tasks, but rather flexible and adaptable to the context. In this presentation we’ll describe how cutting edge Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are used to create high quality restoration designs automatically. We’ll share some lessons we learned on the way and best practices that might be helpful to enterprises that are willing to take steps into the future of manufacturing.
