The transformational potential of digitalization on manufacturing promises to shake up the manufacturing industry with new technology entrants emerging as slow to move incumbents fade. Already impacting other industries from retail to transport, and from hospitality to entertainment, the impact on the manufacturing industry has been slower. As manufacturers begin to invest the time, R&D and technology to enable them to compete in a cyber-physical environment, the pay-backs can be significant, but the challenges can also be many. Over the last four years IHS Markit has worked with end-users that have introduced “big data” focused projects. These have varied by industry type, geographic region, company size, and level of maturity of projects. This presentation will introduce findings from case studies that highlight lessons learnt (both good and bad) and provide some “best-practice” tips to the implementation of transformational technologies. Some of the key points addressed include: where and how to start a project; how different industries are applying Industrial IoT technologies; common challenges in introducing analytics-based solutions; how to engage teams to utilize the technologies and how to get them to work together; and what are the potential returns on investments (ROI’s) that have been achieved.
